VA Lonely Is an Eyesore: 4AD Compilation (1987)

In a certain sense, Lonley Is an Eyesore functions as a time-capsule, a snapshot of Post-Punk circa the mid-Eighties, albeit a snapshot saturated with the particular shades and tinctures of the Goth-informed Dream-Pop of the 4AD stable. As a result, there is an aesthetic cohesiveness to this album that is unusual for a compilation, which stems from that fact that, to some extent, 4AD was pushing a particular (Ivo Watts-Russell produced) sound rather than the bands themselves. This approach was taken a step further with the This Mortal Coil releases, in which various 4AD artists were thrown together in the studio (under the control of Watts-Russell) to record cover songs dressed up in 4AD-style gloom. Despite this overriding emphasis on style over substance, Lonely Is an Eyesore holds up quite well 25 years later because it contains an intriguing mix of the influential (Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, Throwing Muses) and the obscure (Dif Juz, The Wolfgang Press, Clan of Xymox), all at the height of their powers. With the exception of the badly dated Colourbox contribution, this album still sounds fresh, dark, and revelatory, even if it is not quite the manifesto it was clearly conceived to be.

Aerospace is: Torbjörn Thorsén, vocals and guitar; Kristian Rosengren, guitar; John Boqvist, piano and organ; Christer Nilsson, bass; Fredrik Balck, drums.

At the outset, Aerospace was all about playing live. All about playing live and all about going on tours. Little surprise, then, that the blondest {and friendliest, possibly} band in the business embarked on their first three-date jaunt to Malmö and back a mere month after forming in Toby’s living room, one of the last days of January 2000. The first ‘practice’ was more about deciding who should play which instrument than grinding the same song for hours on end and the resulting line-up was Toby on vocals and guitar, Kristian on electric guitar, John on organ and Wurlitzer piano and Christer on the bass {Fredrik joined a little later on drums}.

Sticking to their unorthodox ways {unorthodox in a world where bands are half-expected to spend five years in a tiny basement before even considering playing live, at least} the fab five lined up shows in their native Sweden, slowly gaining a reputation among fans of their brand of breezy-but-energetic, melodic guitar pop, and an ardent following wherever they went, celebrating their six month-anniversary by touring the west coast of America for half a month. Rising to the occasion, Aerospace played larger venues than ever before, taking in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle as part of the New Modern Tour, featuring premier American indie pop bands Majestic, My Favorite, The Fairways and others.

Recording always seemed an afterthought, but the sessions that eventually surfaced on »The Bright Idea Called Soul« were just as spectacular as the live shows, still the number one priority of Aerospace.

The fall meant more concerts and the band perfecting their craft through playing all over Stockholm and the rest of the country, with the first birthday crowned by the award for “Best Newcomer” at the prestigious Benno Awards early 2001.

The year that followed saw the band again supporting some of their musical heroes: The Aislers Set and The Lucksmiths on their respective tours of Sweden, and another summer of love was spent in San Francisco where Aerospace “blew away most of the other bands” {Peter Hahndorf, TweeNet} at the four-day Popfest 2001.

One year later, Aerospace can add an album and twenty-odd shows to their resumé {including first-time trips to Norway, England and Scotland and playing with Belle and Sebastian in Stockholm} and are getting ready to record the follow-up to »The Bright Idea Called Soul«, set to take their music to the next level.

Answer sheet, the ukulele duo consisting of Wafiq Giotama (Ogi) and Mas Gilang Karebet (Rebet). 2 Javanese youngsters from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Met at the same class on high school, chatted around until they found some similarity, music. Rebet at first was already interested with mixing, as he had a self electro project. Ogi was a drummer for a Deathcore band. One day, there was an intern art festival at their school that they have chosen to take participation in. They decided to gather together with another friend but then ended up being only the two of them. They tried the two man band format with only guitar and drums. It didn't work out so the project disbanded.

After several months, Ogi found his lover over the internet, the ukulele. His curiosity about ukulele made himself as the co-founder of Indonesia Ukulele Community (with his two other friends). Interested along the way, Ogi spreaded the virus. Rebet got something called "UKESYNDROME" and decided to re-unite as Answer Sheet. The name "Answer Sheet" comes from like when you're on an exam, sometimes you get a good mark, sometimes awful. That's the way their music is: Sometimes good and sometimes awful, but they're trying the best they can.

Maybe you can describe their music as an Indie/Pop/Folk, even it isn't exactly the best name to describe their music. Influenced by musicians (most of them ukulele players) such as Zach Condon (Beirut), Jake Shimabukuro, Christofer Drew (Nevershoutnever), Stephen Jerzak, Forrest Kline (Hellogoodbye), Jens Lekman, Billie The Vision & The Dancers,The Trees & The Wild, and millions more.

THESE TRAILS

'These Trails was an Honolulu, Hawaii group that was privately pressed on Sinergia Records in 1973. Their eponymous debut is an album that skillfully combines a keen sense of melody with otherworldly vocals from the enigmatic, late 'Margaret Morgan' and innovative sonic experimentation that over 30 years later has stood the test of time. What's more, the band furnished each of its tracks with the colours, scents and atmospheres of the botanical treasure of the volcanic Pacific island paradise that birthed them.

These Trails incorporate the synthesizer and multiple vocal tracks into something rich, moody and magical - with warbling frequency modulation complimenting Morgan's amazing slow vibrato, fleshed out by graceful acoustic guitars. The songs are full of simple beauty and the power of the performances will never diminish over time.

Each track stands out: "Psyche I & Share Your Water" is a 5 minute track begins with a calm, soothing Folk feel highlighted by some fine acoustic guitar work. Eventually it descends into bad trip territory with ghastly vocals and spooky electronics – an outstanding track, very trippy and worth the price of admission alone. 'Garden Botanum' is another strong highlight that hits like a ray of Hawaiian sunshine, the arrangements are free and green with lots of interesting twists, the vocals are beautifully exotic. 'Rapt Attention' is short, perfect ditty with a twee, joyful feeling and an incredible vocal performance. This is an unbelievably wonderful piece of music and one of the greatest albums of the 70s.'

Location is very often everything when it comes to great folk music, whether it be the tranquil green countryside of home-counties England that informed the pastoral moods of Nick Drakes legendary albums, or the heather-clad moorland and Neolithic sites of Northern England used today as backdrops to the avant-folk experimentation of Xenis Emputae Travelling Band. In the world of psychedelic folk there are few better examples of this than the sole self-titled release from 1973 by These Trails, a then little known folk act from Hawaii, that is now held up, with deserved reverence, as a cult-classic of the genre. Arguably one of the finest pop groups of all time, The Smiths released an impeccable collection of records between their debut in 1983 and their swansong in 1987. Among their many fans are several top artists from California-based indie Matinée Recordings, so the label invited twelve of them to pay respect to the brilliance of The Smiths and mark the 20th anniversary of their first album with this sincere tribute. Sibylle Baier

Sibylle Baier is a German folk singer and actress whose musical abilities achieved belated recognition with the 2006 release of the album Colour Green, compiled from songs she had recorded in the early 1970s.

Having played guitar and piano as a young girl, she was moved to write her first song, “Remember The Day”, after taking a road trip with a friend across the Alps to Genoa, via Strasbourg. She appeared in Wim Wenders’ 1973 film Alice in the Cities, and her music also featured in Umarmungen und andere Sachen (1975), a German Jochen Richter film set in Bavaria about three romantically involved bank robbers. Baier opted not to pursue an acting or singing career, and moved to America where she concentrated on raising a family.

The songs that went on to make up her album Colour Green were home reel-to-reel tape recordings Baier had made in Germany between 1970 and 1973. Some thirty years later her son Robby compiled a CD from these recordings to give to family members as presents. He also gave a copy to Dinosaur Jr’s J Mascis, who in turn passed it along to the Orange Twin label. Orange Twin released the album in February 2006. She is expected to release a second studio album. She performs the song “Let Us Know” in Wim Wenders’ movie Palermo Shooting (2008).

The Duckworth Lewis Method are an Irish pop group formed by Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy and Thomas Walsh of Pugwash. The Duckworth Lewis Method is also the title of the group's only album, which was released on 3 July 2009, a few days before the start of the 2009 Ashes series. A concept album about cricket, the album has 12 tracks one of which is instrumental. The album was mixed and recorded in Dublin Abbey Road Studios. and was mastered at

Hannon and Walsh have described their album as "a kaleidoscopic musical adventure through the beautiful and rather silly world of cricket."

The track 'Jiggery Pokery' features guest cameo performances from Phill Jupitus, Alexander Armstrong, Matt Berry and more. Berry also features on the track 'Mason on the Boundary'.

SEA INDIE (Southeast Asia Indie) is a group that try to unite and promote indie scenes in Southeast Asian region; Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand

The idea for SEA INDIE (Southeast Asia Indie) came to Isarapan Boonyaso in December of 2008 after he realised that the Southeast Asian region was becoming a hotbed of indiepop talent. Isarapan's first compilation was made for fun just to share with his friends but he subsequently realised that there was a much wider, indeed world-wide interest, in the music and the SEA INDIE (Southeast Asia Indie) label was officially formed in 2009. Although he would rather called it as a group or network of friends who share love and appreciate in SEA INDIE music. We are keen to stress the supportive and friendly community nature of the SEA INDIE set-up.

SEA INDIE uses compilations as its main device in raising awareness of the growing indie scenes in Southeast Asian countries and has released three previous free compilations: 'Day To Embrace (Indonesia Indiepop Scene)', 'Summers Daydream' and 'Brilliant sight of sounds (Singapore Indie Scene)' released on August 01, 2010.

Hollywood nobody has become a conceptual band, a band focused on bossanova, and a mix of other genre such as pop and pull up a dark theme. Hollywood nobody’s lyrics are telling about the reality of life from young adult’s view. Common issues such friendship, romance, and how to face the complex days of live, we keep thinking that life is not always magnificent and colorful. Sometimes, life could be darker than we’ve ever imagined. This dark side is what we poured into Hollywood nobody’s lyrics. But we also realized, there are other colors represent to lighten the dark side, and as a young adult we should still enjoy our dark and light lives. Hollywood nobody’s music represents it. So far, we had produced 12 songs and perform on stage and off stage (radio performance). We also covering other bands songs (different genre) in a Hollywood nobody way. Conceptually, we play what we like, and we will never make music contradictory with our desire and our idealism. We will never tread on whats in and hot in the industry at the moment. We are not rebel., yet we are not posseur. Hollywood nobody is our heart, our soul, and our mind.

A perky, childish, whimsical pop band formed in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 2009. They range their influences from popular culture (comic book superheroes, Greek mythology, urban legends, novels) to everyday life (end-of-vacation blues, intoxicating drinks, sugary drinks, road accidents), beside their likely heroes like Heavenly, Talulah Gosh, Another Sunny Day and Acid House Kings. Aim to take bedroom musicianship further with cheap instruments, rhymes and riddles, an outlandish sense of humor, mediocre musical skill, and cups over cups of coffee.

On June 22nd 2010 they have released a free digital EP under February Records.

These guys are a lot like the Automatics. Let’s see what I had to say about them:

“Fun, fun, and then maybe a little more fun. That’s the best way I can describe . They seem to be influenced by a lot of early pop rock, being stripped of fancy production or electronic tricks. has a rather squeaky and nasal voice, yet it works perfectly with the up-tempo, clean guitar rock and numerous vocal harmonies. Unfortunately their discography is rather slim and their performances few and far between. I guess it just makes them that more iconic. And fun!”

Yep, seems to work quite well. Just like the Automatics, their music is very hard to track down. The only video or audio clip I could find was this very short video of a rather lousy hacky-sacker. Ah well, it’s oddly fitting.

The author is right to compare them to the Automatics, as the famous Momoko Yoshino (The Automatics, Tiger Shovel Nose, Tirolean Tape Chapter 4) participates on the CD Inside Out, Upside Down.

WOVEN BONES

Woven Bones is a band from Austin, Texas. They somehow manage to blend garage rock, shoegaze, psychobilly, and noise rock to create a hard-driving, almost “hard rock” feel with super fuzzed out guitars and reverberated vocals. Influences include The Velvet Underground, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Gun Club, and Link Wray.

Relocating to Austin from his roots in Florida in 2008, Andrew Burr slithered restlessly, reinventing Woven Bones from it’s primordial Spacemen 3-blues/psyche jangle into a hard driving, meaner, louder, and altogether more vicious band that’s turned into one of their city’s new shining lights of creative energy. With most of the lineup changes settled firmly into place, woven bones orbit around central figure Andrew and his gang of nocturnal friends, Matt and James, who round out their sound into the chest-pounding monstrosity that they are today. Crossing the dark drawl of the cramps ‘76 demo-era sludge with Jesus and Mary Chain’s demonic drum waves, and a dedication to simplicity as ravaging and throbbing as those buzzed out gospel recordings that Sonic Boom tried so desperately to recreate, Woven Bones are not here to put up a front. More likely, they’ll be the ones to burn it all down. Their honest, neurotically-frayed, and manic songs conjure ominous impulses instantly on impact, and weave an intricate web of repetition that certainly carries them down the dark path to your soul.

The Superimposers are Dan Solo and Miles Copeland, two of the UK’s finest perfect pop practitioners, and Shawn Lee (collaborator with Money Mark and Tommy Gurrero) produces.

The Superimposers have been going since 2005, when former car mechanic and fishmonger Dan Solo met Miles Copeland in a south coast joke shop. After a period studying musique concrète and avant-garde production at college in London, they’re now focusing on their future as immaculate pasticheurs of a bounteous period in pop history.

Flashback to 2005, The Superimposers release their debut album to resounding applause from both the national press and a captivated, music loving public, followed by a second album release on their own Wonderfulsound label, EPs, remixes, collaborations, live BBC radio sessions and airplay throughout the world. Fast forward to 2010: The Superimposers unleash their third album release, ‘Sunshine Pops!’.

Think Morricone with the help of Shuggie Otis, Curt Boettcher, Emitt Rhodes, Nilsson and Ronnie Lane. The track ‘Sometimes’ features Jonny Trunk.

The Townhouses is the solo music project of Melbourne based artist, Leigh Hannah. Recording everything in Leigh’s empty shed on a secluded property, he uses cheap equipment to create a sound blending ambient soundscapes with the tonalities of world instruments, both acoustic and electric. Since Winter 2009, The Townhouses have released three EPs, with a fourth EP and a debut album coming in early 2010. The latest EP, ‘The Lost Kagu’, was released by Perth based label OWLS Records just a mere 4 months after the birth of the project. The release was met with praise and airplay by Triple J, RRR, Fbi and PBS. ‘Islands’, the Townhouses’ debut album, derived from a demo count of 50+, is to be released independently in March 2010. Leigh is joined live by good friends, Tania Timotic and Alex O’Gorman.

YANN TOMITA

Yann Tomita (ヤン富田) was born in Tokyo in 1952, a Japanese musician and producer with a great passion towards steel pans. Described as one of the country's top percussionists.

In the late 80s and early 90s, Yann Tomita was a member of the bands Tiny Exotica Boys, Rude Flower and a little more known Water Melon.
After 1992 he has released solo work under his own name plus aliases including Astro Age Steel Orchestra and Doopees. He has also collaborated with artists including Grandmaster Flash. He is the one of pioneer of the various music fields (Hip Hop, Dub, Acid Jazz, Monde, Exotic, Electronic music, etc.) in Japan. He also shared the first professional steelpan player in Japan.
Tomita's music varies between steel pan -dominated lounge exotica, cute J-pop -style tunes and very experimental pieces using electronic instruments, turntables and sounds of nature.
